Cookie Manster Attack
It’s high time for a new food meme. We’ve witnessed the bacon stronghold, cupcake mania, and an entire blog dedicated to food that makes people fat. Now it’s time for cookies, and the men who eat them.
“Having a sweet tooth” is generally blamed on hormonal women and doting grandmas and the cupcake generation is proof that sweets, in most incarnations, are marketed with pink. (Thank you, Sex and the City, for making the block around Magnolia Bakery impenetrable.) But, like the vegetarian backlash, we may have David Chang to thank for redirecting the gender course in the arena of cookiedom. Sure, Chang’s pastry chef Christina Tosi is female, but an association with Change adds kitchen cred and f-bombs to what would otherwise be just another bakery. Momofuku Milk Bar’s cookies are savory and behemoth, mixing in ingredients like pretzels, potato chips, and cornflakes with liberal helpings of chocolate and marshmallow. Milk Bar cookies are manly cookies.
Which is why I was delighted, but not surprised, to hear from a friend who works in the kitchen at Bobo, who claims the first thing he ever cooked on his own (at eight years old, no less) was a batch of chocolate chip cookies. He’s currently known to frequent Milk Bar and plow through a half-dozen sugar-laden treats in one sitting. Walking through Artists & Fleas in Williamsburg recently with a girlfriend, we ran into a guy acquaintance who had started baking and selling his own organic cookies. Though my friend and I just ate samples, she ended up selecting four cookies to take home… to her boyfriend. A hot dude who isn’t afraid to love cookies. (Also related: men who aren’t afraid to love chocolate.)
Now we just need models to get this meme off the ground by documenting their healthy, natural man love for a well-baked cookie. I’m thinking Ryan Gosling with pecan sandies and Dave Franco with all-American chocolate chunk. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, how do you feel about Snickerdoodles? Give me a call.
